Panic Disorder is a common anxiety disorder where the individual experiences panic attacks and worries about having another. These panic attacks usually come “out of the blue” and not provoked by anything. Although, there are situations that provoke panic attacks, such as being confined to closed spaces. Panic attacks are usually so disturbing that individuals that suffer from them try to avoid situations that provoke them, such as trains, busses, and elevators. At the onset of a panic attack, the individual feels anxiety getting worse and they begin to breath rapidly. The rapid breathing and fear of the panic attack coming on provokes more anxiety, the cycle continues until the individual faints from hyperventilation or is able to recover on their own. Panic attacks are treated by teaching the individual to identify the onset, and quickly practice breathing exercises. The breathing exercise works to slow the breathing, take the individuals mind off the anxiety, and allow them space in time to dispute the anxiety provoking thoughts.
