In Greek, agoraphobia means “fear of the marketplace.” However, individuals experiencing agoraphobia have fear of any situation or place where escape will be difficult or embarrassing, or help is unavailable if they should have an anxiety attack. Agoraphobia usually develops after an individuals have had a series of panic attacks, and therefore fear going places where they may suffer another one. Social Phobia is similar to agoraphobia in that the individual fears an embarrassing situation so they try to avoid it. Social Phobia usually begin in adolescents, but can continue through adulthood. The individual suffering from Social Phobia fear appearing clumsy, silly, or shameful, and having this behavior noticed by others. Treatment of Agoraphobia and Social Phobia is similar to treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, where the individual is taught to identify the thoughts, dispute them, and expose the individual to situations with the frustration of being in an uncomfortable place little by little until they build up the tolerance and become comfortable in unfamiliar situations and places.
