Individuals with Antisocial Personality Disorder usually disregard and violate the rights of other people; they cannot or will not conform to the norms of society. This said, there are a number of ways in which individuals can be antisocial. Some are con artist; other may be graceless thugs, or drug abusers/dealers. Women with the disorder are often involved in prostitution (Morrison, 1995).
The irresponsible behavior affects nearly every life area. Besides substance use, there may be fighting, lying and criminal behavior of every conceivable sort: theft, violence, confidence schemes, and child and spouse abuse. They do not appear to be genuinely remorseful for their behavior. About 3% of men and 1% of women suffer from this disorder. It is more common in lower class populations and runs in families; it probably has both a genetic and an environmental basis. Many of these individuals die by suicide or homicide (Morrison, 1995).
Treatment of Antisocial Personality Disorder unfortunately is usually done in correctional facilities or inpatient hospital settings. The treatment used is called cognitive restructuring, where the individual is taught how to think, behave, and emotionally respond different to antisocial arousal.
